Fighters also refer to any and all space-capable unit that can be carried as cargo, although in vanilla this is usually just fighters and bombers. Normally, ships expend all their movement when jumping, but this does not apply to cargo. Fighters, which can be carried as cargo, can then unload in space after it's mothership has jumped and attack immediately. It's for this reason alone that fighters/bombers are one of the most strategically flexible and useful units in the game.
